A powerful coalition of key fisheries and aquaculture organisations has formally launched a joint call for an EU Action Plan on Blue Foods.

Led by the European Bureau for Conservation and Development, Europêche, European Association of Fish Producers Organisations, Federation of European Aquaculture Producers and the European Fish Processors and Traders Association, the initiative was unveiled at the European Parliament, hosted by Carmen Crespo Diaz, chair of the Committee of Fisheries.

EU fisheries are calling for action to boost sustainable blue foods amid declining production and consumption

“Blue foods must be at the core of the EU’s Ocean Pact and its sustainable food strategy,” said Diaz.

“This action plan is a timely and science-based roadmap and we now call on the European Commission to move from vision to action by supporting responsible aquaculture, fair market conditions and a competitive, future-oriented fisheries sector.

“There is no truly ambitious Ocean Pact without a strong commitment to blue food systems.”

With global food systems under increasing pressure from climate disruptions, conflict and geopolitical tensions, the coalition emphasised the urgency of integrating aquatic foods into the EU’s broader sustainability and food security strategies.

Javier Garat, rapporteur for the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), confirmed the EESC’s support, citing the action plan as critical for modernising the sector and enhancing Europe’s food security.

The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries was also present to respond to the proposal and share updates.

Despite its potential, Europe’s blue food sector is in decline, with per capita seafood consumption at a ten-year low. Stakeholders argue that stronger EU support is crucial to reversing the trend and securing a sustainable future.
