The offshore component of the Argentine red shrimp fishery has achieved certification under the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Standard, marking a major milestone for one of the country’s most valuable marine resources.
The recognition follows certification of the onshore segment in March 2025, bringing the industry closer to fully verified sustainable management.

The offshore fleet, the largest in the sector, is formed by a client group of 34 companies, highlighting a coordinated effort across the industry.
“The certification of offshore Argentine red shrimp is the result of years of commitment and continuous improvement by the sector,” said Cristian Vallejos, program director for Latin America at the MSC.
“This progress not only strengthens Argentina’s position in international seafood markets but also shows that it is possible to combine productivity, quality and long-term sustainability.”
Fishing for Argentine red shrimp typically runs from April or May through to September or October. In 2024, reported catches exceeded 139,000 tonnes. Much of the shrimp is frozen on board immediately after capture, preserving its quality and freshness.
Industry representatives said the achievement reflects close collaboration between companies, regulators and technical experts.
With both offshore and onshore operations now certified, Argentine red shrimp further cements its status as a strategic national resource and a regional benchmark for responsible fishing.
