Peru’s Ministry of Production (Produce) has authorised the start of the second season of industrial fishing for anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and white anchovy (Anchoa nasus), destined for indirect human consumption, in the maritime area between the extreme north of the country’s maritime domain and 15°59´59.9′’S.

Through Ministerial Resolution No. 00391-2022-PRODUCE, the total maximum permissible catch limit in the north-central zone of Peru is 2,283,000 tonnes.
The start of the fishing season will be on 28 November 2022, with five days of exploratory fishing starting on 23 November in the maritime area outside five nautical miles from the coastline, in the extreme north of the Peruvian sea and 15°59’59.9’’S.
It was also announced that the completion date of the second fishing season 2022 will be once the total maximum allowable catch limit of the authorised north-central zone has been reached, or failing that, when the Peruvian Sea Institute (Imarpe) recommends it due to environmental or biological circumstances.
Commenting on the new season, IFFO, the Marine Ingredients Organisation, stated that the Peruvian anchovy has historically provided the raw material to produce roughly 20% of the global tonnage of fishmeal and fish oil, with its prices becoming the world’s benchmark for all trades of marine ingredients.
IFFO said the quota indicates a healthy biomass, estimated at 6,826,839 tonnes.
“Once again, the positive effects of the responsible management of the largest reduction fishery in the world is confirmed,” it said.
