The Scottish Shellfish Marketing Group is set to transfer its processing operation to a larger facility to enhance efficiency and provide a platform for the development of new products for its growing customer base.

The company will move from its current site in the Motherwell Food Park in Lanarkshire to the former Scot Trout processing facility only a short distance away, which at about 3,000 square metres is double the size of SSMG’s present site. Work has now begun on upgrading the new facility for shellfish processing and it is envisaged that the full transfer of operations will be completed by the summer of 2012.
Stephen Cameron, the managing director of SSMG, said the company had been at its current site since the business was formed in 1992 and it made sound business sense to locate to newer, larger premises, particularly since its customer base in the multiple retail and foodservice sectors had grown significantly in recent years.
SSMG currently employs 83 people and it is thought that the move will provide the impetus for the creation new jobs at some stage in the future as the business continues to develop. Grant funding is being sought to ensure successful completion of the development project.
