A Tinytag data logger, manufactured by Gemini, has been found in full working condition, a year and a half after it was lost in the Atlantic Ocean.
Deep sea fishermen use Tinytag loggers to ensure they are in the correct position to catch certain types of temperature-sensitive fish.
The captain of fishing trawler “Geir” was measuring temperatures using the Deep Water Logger Kit at a depth of 1,650m in the Atlantic Ocean, off of the Irish coast. Here they lost one of their Deep Water Loggers. However, a year and a half later the captain received a call from a Norwegian trawler who had found something in their net that looked like it had originated from the “Geir”. It was sent for calibration and further investigation to see whether any data could be recovered. When the case was opened, the logger was completely intact, and even after being at the bottom of the Atlantic for such a long period of time, amazingly the data could still be accessed and was accurate.
