As aquaculture continues to expand globally, questions around trust, regulation and market access are becoming central to long-term success. At the Aquaculture – Driving Sustainable Growth conference, 22nd September, Egill Þorri Steingrimsson, Head of Coordination, MAST will explore how strong governance frameworks can support, rather than limit, industry growth.

Drawing on Iceland’s experience, Egill will highlight how effective policy, robust official oversight and credible standards in food safety, animal health and welfare form the foundation for sustainable expansion. Far from being barriers, these elements are increasingly essential for securing international market access and maintaining consumer confidence.

The session will also focus on the importance of collaboration across government, regulators, science and industry. Building alignment between these actors is key to ensuring aquaculture develops in a way that is both responsible and commercially competitive.

With experience spanning veterinary practice, regulatory leadership and international roles across Europe and the Arctic, Egill brings a practical perspective on how regulatory systems operate in real-world conditions.

His session will offer valuable insight for operators, policymakers and the wider supply chain looking to balance growth ambitions with the need for transparency, accountability and long-term trust in blue food systems.
