BIM is continuing work on a €2.2m project which aims to stabilise the market price of brown crab in the short term and to establish a European quality standard for the species.

The project is being led by BIM in partnership with fishery representative organisations and agencies from the UK, France, Portugal, Spain and Ireland.
Greater communication and an economic analysis of route to market structures will be progressed as well as new innovative product formats and cheaper transport options based on technical, market and consumer research to ultimately increase sales.
Work plans are currently underway to examine the interaction between science and industry in addition to developing a brown crab quality standard. Other action items being progressed by the group are characterising all aspects of the brown crab fishery and examining new technologies for the industry.
BIM will be hosting an industry workshop in late January which aims to brief industry on the project’s goals and to seek feedback and collaboration to carry out the various work plans.
