With operations along the entire Norwegian coast, Abyss is a leading supplier of maritime services to the aquaculture sector. It has ordered a pair of new hybrid vessels to be built at Vaagland Båtbyggeri to add to its fleet of ROVs, submarines and service craft.

The contract was signed by Victor Jensen, CEO of Abyss, and Gunnar Arnold Norbø, CEO of Vaagland Båtbyggeri

With clear goals for minimising emission, the order is an important milestone in the company’s commitment to sustainability, capacity and quality.

“With these vessels, we strengthen our position as a future-oriented and environmentally conscious player in the aquaculture industry. It’s not just about vessels, but about delivering safer, more effective and sustainable services to our customers,” Abyss CEO Victor Jensen said.

The two new vessels are part of the company’s long-term strategy to modernise the fleet and reduce its environmental footprint. The company has set a goal to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% by 2030, and investment in hybrid technology is a central factor in achieving this.

The hybrid vessels for Abyss will contribute to lower emissions, less noise and higher energy efficiency

These 28.9-metre LOA, 12.6-metre breadth vessels have been developed with design company Progreen. Each is to be outfitted with a 1051kWt battery pack and will have a 140-square-metre working deck with heavy-duty cranes. Work on constructing the hulls in Poland is scheduled to start in August and these will then be brought to the Vaagland yard for outfitting. Delivery is scheduled for early 2027.

The hybrid vessels will contribute to lower emissions, less noise and higher energy efficiency. At the same time, Abyss is gaining increased flexibility and capacity for 24-hour continuous operation – especially important in an industry with increasingly increasing demands for precision, sustainability and reliability.

“We are delighted to be entrusted to build these vessels for Abyss. It’s a customer with high ambitions and clear demands. With our covered dock and use of local suppliers, we will deliver vessels with high quality and low environmental footprint,” said Gunnar Arnold Norbø, CEO of Vaagland Båtbyggeri.

“We are building a fleet for the future - and we do it with partners who share our vision of quality, innovation and environmental responsibility,” Jensen added. “These vessels make us even better equipped to meet the needs of our customers and the demands of the future.”
