Stolt Sea Farm (SSF) has made aquaculture history by becoming the world’s only turbot producer to achieve full Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certification across all its farms.

The milestone was officially recognised during a presentation at Seafood Expo Global in Barcelona, where ASC’s chief executive Chris Ninnes awarded the certification to SSF’s president Jordi Trías.

Ninnes praised the company’s sustainability efforts, saying, “Stolt Sea Farm’s achievement sets a powerful example to the entire seafood farming industry, showing that it’s possible to scale sustainably while protecting our environment, supporting communities, and ensuring fish welfare.”

The certification reflects years of dedicated work across SSF’s nine land-based turbot farms in Norway, Spain and Portugal. SSF’s Øye facility in Norway led the way with its certification in April 2024, followed by independent audits of the remaining eight farms completed by year-end.

Trias celebrated the accomplishment, saying, “This is a truly proud moment for all of us. It reflects our unwavering commitment to quality, sustainability and animal welfare.”

Berta Fernandez, SSF’s Food Safety, Quality and Environment manager, emphasised the team effort behind the achievement. “It’s a fantastic example of our commitment to sustainable operations and ensuring future generations continue to enjoy wonderful seafood,” she said.
