The Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) has unveiled its Aquaculture Feed Solutions Toolkit, designed to help companies address climate change, habitat and biodiversity challenges linked to aquaculture feed.
This comprehensive resource compiles more than 80 tools, standards, initiatives and platforms from a range of organisations, offering guidance and case studies to enhance feed sustainability.

“We want all seafood companies to include aquaculture feed in their sustainability commitments and policies because feed poses significant environmental and climate challenges,” said Paul Bulcock, aquaculture information manager at SFP.
“Addressing this issue, along with continued improvements in farm planning and management, will enhance aquaculture’s role as a low-carbon, environmentally sustainable and socially responsible food source.”
Aquaculture is critical to meeting the world’s nutritional needs and now comprises more than half of the world’s seafood supply.
However, the production of aquaculture feed poses significant environmental challenges, contributing to issues such as land conversion, deforestation and pollution. It is estimated that feed ingredients account for 70-80% of aquaculture’s carbon impact.
Notable retailers and suppliers, including Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Thai Union and Walmart, have already established goals to enhance the sustainability of the feed in their products.
The Feed Solutions Toolkit, supported by the Walmart Foundation, represents a significant step in consolidating existing sustainability resources into one accessible platform, promoting responsible aquaculture practices on a larger scale.
