The Scottish Salmon Company (SSC) is renaming its operations in Scotland to Bakkafrost Scotland.

SSC was taken over by Bakkafrost in 2019. This renaming will ensure the group operates as a single company just with two regions of production. The company’s stated ambition is to become Scotland’s leading sustainable salmon producer and it has invested £711 million over five years to increase the output of sustainable premium salmon by more than 40%.

“When we acquired The Scottish Salmon Company, we saw the exceptional value of Scottish provenance and an opportunity to create the leading and most sustainable salmon producer in Scotland,” said Regin Jacobsen, chief executive, Bakkafrost.

“The next step in realising this potential is the renaming of our Scottish operations to Bakkafrost Scotland. This represents an important milestone in our ‘One Company’ strategic focus [and] also signals that we are fully committed to Scotland.”

As part of the company’s sustainability drive, the first Bakkafrost Scotland RAS facility is being created at Applecross with a target to produce 500g of smolt. RAS technology will eventually be used across all freshwater production with details on a second facility to be announced over the coming months.

“Bakkafrost is the most vertically integrated salmon farming business in the world, allowing the Scottish operation full control and responsibility over all aspects of our supply chain and production,” said Ian Laister, managing director, Bakkafrost Scotland.

“Our larger smolt strategy drives our journey to become Scotland’s leading and most sustainable producer of the finest quality salmon.”
