Hendrix Genetics has opened a new shrimp breeding multiplication centre (BMC) in the Andhra Pradesh region of India.
Developed under a joint venture with Sapthagiri Hatcheries, the expansion will help Hendrix Genetics meet the growing demand for shrimp genetics in India.

With a broodstock capacity of more than 150,000, the new BMC is managed by Kona Bay, a subsidiary of Hendrix Genetics, under the local leadership of Deepak Patnaik. The new facility will decentralise Kona Bay’s production, avoiding high-risk exports and ensuring clients have ready access to its products.
Hendrix says the BMC will produce the same shrimp products as those currently imported from its Hawaiian facility, the home of the firm’s R&D genetic engine. The BMC will maintain the same genetics as the current broodstock from Hawaii, adapted to the Indian market.
“The PPL will be stocked in Q4 2023 from our Hawaii facility, and the first broodstock sales will take place in Q2 2024,” said David Danson, director of operations and shrimp.
“We also have started to build our local team of experts, aiming for up to 40 employees.”
The new centre is 1 kilometre from the sea with a two kilometre exclusion zone around the site. It features water filtration systems, effluent sterilisation, internal quarantine and grow-out modules to keep batches separate.
This is the company’s second BMC, following the opening of one in Indonesia. Hendrix Genetics says this latest opening helps position the company in establishing a nucleus breeding centre in the future.
