Compassion in World Farming’s Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards (GFAWA) has recognised 49 winners from over 15 countries for advancing aquaculture and animal welfare.

The event held  in Paris on 21 October, hosted by sustainable business advocate Deborah Meaden, celebrated businesses driving positive change across farm animal welfare and sustainable supply chains. 

“It’s inspiring to see so many businesses worldwide making significant strides in animal welfare and sustainability,” said Deborah Meaden.

“These awards highlight the growing commitment to creating a future where farmed animals and aquaculture species are treated with care and respect.”

Aquaculture spotlight

With a special focus on aquaculture, the awards showcased innovative solutions improving the lives of over 500 million animals annually.

Among the standout achievements was Swiss-based Regal Springs, which was awarded the inaugural Aquaculture Innovation Award for its humane fish welfare practices.

As a leading tilapia producer, Regal Springs was recognised for its pioneering work in developing and implementing electrical stunning for fish, ensuring more humane treatment across its global operations.

Laurent Develle, EVP Group General Counsel at Regal Springs, said, “Fish welfare is our priority and this award validates the hard work of our teams in advancing responsible aquaculture.”

Albert Heijn and Marks & Spencer also received special recognition for their commitments to shrimp welfare, eliminating harmful practices and setting industry standards for humane treatment.

The awards highlighted the critical role of innovation in aquaculture, promoting animal welfare and sustainable food production.
