BioMar has teamed up with agricultural supply chain specialist Cefetra to help reduce emissions from key vegetable-based ingredients used in fish feed.
Despite aquaculture’s efficient feed conversion, over 80% of its emissions stem from feed production and raw material sourcing. The new partnership seeks to tackle these emissions at their source by supporting regenerative agricultural practices and improving the link between crop farming and fish farming.

“At BioMar, we believe that responsible growth in aquaculture starts at the source,” said Ivana Russo, formulations manager and sustainability lead at BioMar UK.
“By partnering with Cefetra, we are reducing emissions where it matters most, while supporting farmers and building more resilient food systems.”
With initial implementation planned in the UK, the initiative will focus on reducing the carbon footprint of crops such as wheat, a core component of aquaculture diets.
Cefetra’s Ecosystem Services, developed in partnership with Soil Capital in 2023, enables UK farmers to transition to regenerative agriculture, improve soil health and deliver verified carbon removals.
“Cefetra’s unique position allows us to aggregate demand from hundreds of buyers across industries,” said James Neilson, supply chain director at Cefetra Ecosystem Services.
“We can ensure improvements on the farm translate into real climate benefits for downstream sectors like aquaculture.”
BioMar will integrate the lower-emission ingredients into its feed formulas as part of its wider sustainability targets.
The two are hailing the partnership as a forward-looking approach to climate-aware aquaculture, combining agricultural innovation with marine food production sustainability.
