The volume of salmon harvested in the Faroe Islands by the Bakkafrost Group in the first-quarter of this year increased by 3,300 tonnes year-on-year to the equivalent of 14,300 tonnes head-on gutted (HOG) fish, according to the producer’s latest trading update.

With regards to its different production regions in the Faroes, the company’s Farming North operations contributed 4,600 tonnnes (up from 4,100 tonnes in Q1 2023), while its Farming West farms supplied 7,500 tonnes (an increase from 3,800 tonnes) and its Farming South farms provided 2,200 tonnes (down from 3,000 tonnes).
Meanwhile, its Scottish operations harvested 7,300 tonnes of fish, down from 8,100 tonnes in Q1 2023. Its North farms provided 4,000 tonnes and its South operations supplied 3,300 tonnes.
The group’s feed sales for Q1 2024 totalled 27,000 tonnes, up from 22,300 tonnes a year previously.

The group harvested a total 73,006 tonnes of salmon last year. It has forecast a 2024 harvest of 91,000 tonnes gutted weight, with 66,000 tonnes coming from the Faroe Islands and 25,000 tonnes from Scotland.
It has a longer-term harvest target to reach 165,000 tonnes by 2028.
Bakkafrost is the largest salmon farming company in the Faroes and the second largest in Scotland.
