Peruvian marine ingredients, including fishmeal and fish oil, have reached a new sustainability milestone after Austral Group became the first producer in the country to register the life cycle assessment (LCA) of its products as Branded Data within the Global Feed LCA Institute (GFLI) database.
The international platform compiles environmental information on feed ingredients used in animal production, enabling customers, feed manufacturers and aquaculture companies to access accurate, verifiable and globally comparable data based on primary information rather than sector averages.

“This milestone allows us to make the environmental impact of our products more transparent and provide reliable information to our customers,” explained Adriana Giudice, chief executive of Austral Group.
“As producers of fishmeal and fish oil, we are pioneers in contributing primary, verifiable and globally comparable data, reinforcing our commitment to an increasingly sustainable, efficient and competitive fishing industry.”
Austral Group’s inclusion in the GFLI database follows an LCA conducted by the Peruvian Life Cycle and Industrial Ecology Network with support from the company. The assessment complies with international standards including FAO-LEAP, PEFCR Feed and ISO-14040 and 14044.
Unlike databases based on secondary information or market averages, Branded Data provides product-specific environmental performance information. Austral Group said its published data is primarily based on verified primary information and underwent both GFLI internal review and independent third-party assessment.
The LCA identified several factors supporting the products’ environmental performance, including prioritised natural gas use, efficient anchoveta biomass management and fuel-efficient operations within the Peruvian fishing fleet.
