Governments sign coastal and ocean management agreement

30 Mar 2011

A memorandum of understanding between Nova Scotia and the government of Canada will improve management and protection of the province’s coastal and ocean resources.

Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Sterling Belliveau and federal Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Gail Shea signed the Canada-Nova Scotia Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management Memorandum of Understanding to stress the need for collaboration.

"The province and government of Canada have been working side by side for many years to maintain healthy coasts and oceans," said Belliveau. "As our coastal areas face challenges and pressures, we need to work even more closely to ensure a coordinated and strategic approach."

This agreement will set the stage for federal and provincial agencies to work together more effectively on ocean and coastal management issues.

The agreement will focus on: implementing Nova Scotia's future coastal strategy; integrating coastal and oceans management and planning; managing and sharing information relevant to coastal management and planning; and developing a network to advance coastal research in Nova Scotia.
