The search operation for two missing crewmen of the UK based ‘Ocean Way’ fishing trawler, which ran into problems off the Northumberland coast at the weekend, has been called off.
The vessel’s captain James Noble from Aberdeenshire, who was rescued from the scene, died in hospital, but the other two rescued crewmen, who were taken to hospital suffering from hypothermia, were released without treatment.
Bertie Armstrong, chief executive, Scottish Fishermen’s Federation, said: “Our heartfelt thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of the crew at this very difficult time. This terrible accident highlights the very real dangers our fishermen face on a constant basis and is a sober reminder of the important role fishing plays in putting food on our plates.”
The media has reported that none of the crew seemed to wearing lifejackets at the time, but a Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) is now understood to be underway.
