Bakkafrost subsidiary, FarCargo has taken receipt of its first aircraft to help ensure delivery of the freshest salmon from its Faroe Island sites.
Previously used by American Airlines for passenger flights since 2001, the Boeing 757-200 has been repurposed and can now hold up to 230 cbm of refrigerated cargo.

The aircraft is equipped with energy efficient winglets and RNP 0.13 technology, making it well suited to flight operations to and from the Faroe Islands. It will run partly on sustainable aviation fuel.
Once the necessary paperwork has been obtained the Boeing will begin operations between the Faroes and the US and Europe with stops in Iceland, New Jersey and Denmark. The ultimate goal is for multiple departures each week.
FarCargo has signed a deal with Nordic GSA who will offer the cargo space to the freight forwarders from Newark in the US to Billund in Denmark and to the Faroe Islands. Customers can book cargo space through their local freight forwarder, who will then deal with Nordic GSA.
The company says the new operation will open up further possibilities for the Faroese market for perishables and other cargos which need express shipment.
FarCargo currently has a crew of eight to operate the aircraft, and all have been certified to operate the 757. The company says it plans to hire additional crew members as the service ramps up.
