Baltic herring and sprat reach MSY
The European Commission has announced that central basin herring and sprat stocks in the Baltic Sea have recovered enough to be able to increase the quota for both stocks in 2013.
Stock recovery measures have been applied over the last three years and now both stocks have reached maximum sustainable yield levels.
The increased quota will bring more profit to fishermen and the processing industry of EU countries fishing in the Baltic.
This brings the number of stocks for which quotas are set and that are fished under the MSY framework in the Baltic Sea to five (out of 10). The others are Western herring, Gulf of Bothnia herring and Eastern cod.
