Archipelago Sea fisheries recommendations

31 Oct 2013

Two Finnish organisations have drawn up new sustainability recommendations for the Archipelago Sea which includes integration of fish farms, planning control and fish-based feed.

The Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute and the Finnish Environment Institute recommend that fish farms start using Baltic sea-fish for fish feed to enable the recycling of nutrients and eliminate the need for fish imports.

Another recommendation is that the national planning control for future fish farms be put into practice and taken account of in the environmental permit process.

The organisations suggest that planning control be used to integrate one owners' fish farms into larger facilities, which they say could reduce the number of fish farms in the Archipelago Sea by up to 60% and also make fish farming more profitable.
