Three leading fish and chip businesses from Cornwall and Scotland have been shortlisted for the 2026 Environment and Sustainable Business Award, one of the most sought-after honours at the National Fish & Chip Awards.

Harbour Lights in Falmouth, The Fish Works in Largs, and The Real Food Café in Tyndrum will now compete for the title, which recognises chippies that embed sustainability across their operations – from sourcing and supply chain governance to staff training, waste management and customer engagement.

Organised by the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), the awards include 14 categories and are known for their rigorous, multi-stage assessment process. To reach finalist status, entrants must demonstrate that environmental responsibility is not an add-on but a core part of their strategic and operational decision-making.

“This year’s Environment and Sustainable Business competitors are some of the most outstanding fish and chip shops for demonstrating that sustainability goes beyond environmental duty and is a fundamental factor for long-lasting success and growth,” NFFF President Andrew Crook said. “Each has shown commendable ethical and strategic know-how driving innovation, resilience and milestone achievements.”

Seafood from Norway – principal sponsor of the National Fish & Chip Awards – is also sponsoring the sustainability category. Bjørn-Erik Stabell, UK Country Director for the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC), said the three finalists illustrate how deeply sustainability values are taking root in the sector.

“It’s great to see these operators recognised for embracing sustainability and ensuring it sits at the heart of their businesses,” Stabell said. “For us in Norway, sustainable practices are a cornerstone of our seafood industry, ensuring we can supply high-quality cod and haddock to British fish and chip shops today and for generations to come.”

Mike and Carol Hulme of Finney’s Benllech in Anglesey, the 2025 winners, said the award had a profound and unexpected effect on their business. “Our sustainability journey didn’t start as a big plan – it began with small changes, lots of learning, and a genuine desire to do better for our community and coastline,” they said. “Since winning, we’ve noticed a real difference in how customers connect with us. People ask more questions, they’re more engaged, and they genuinely care about the choices we’re making.”

They offered encouragement to this year’s finalists: “Celebrate how far you’ve come, be proud of what you’ve achieved, and know that whatever happens, the work you’re doing truly matters.”

The 2026 winner will be announced on 25 February 2026 at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge in London.
