Modi pledges €67m for fisheries sector growth

Central to the event was the launch of 16 projects under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana and the Fisheries Infrastructure Development Fund, with a combined investment of over ₹693 crores (€67 million).

These projects include the foundation of seven new fisheries ventures worth ₹572 crores (€55 million) and the inauguration of nine others totalling ₹121 crores (€12 million) across India.

Key initiatives include the ₹170 crore (€16 million) trout fisheries project in Uttarakhand, the ₹119.94 crore (€12 million) smart and integrated fishing harbour in Puducherry, and a ₹100 crore (€10 million) integrated aqua park in Odisha. A ₹70 crore (€7 million) nutrition hub for sustainable aquaculture was also launched in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh.

These fisheries-focused projects aim to strengthen India’s blue economy by enhancing production and processing infrastructure, creating sustainable livelihoods for coastal and inland fishing communities, and generating significant employment opportunities.

The fisheries initiatives complement two major agricultural schemes also announced at the event — the PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana and the Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses — which together carry an outlay of ₹35,440 crores (€3.5 billion).

The event saw strong representation from the fishing community, including fifty fish farmers from across the country, eight of whom had the opportunity to meet the Prime Minister.
