Sustainable Japanese aquaculture venture
Japanese telecommunications company, NTT, has launched a new venture to promote more efficient and sustainable food production.
In partnership with Regional Fish Institute, NTT Green & Food Corporation will bring together AI, the ‘Internet of Things’ and other communications technologies to initially focus on carbon capture to reduce the environmental impact of land-based seafood farming.
The company has developed a CO2 conversion system which comprises three processes:
The production and sale of algae – NTT has developed a technology which engineers algae to store more CO2 whilst also increasing its growth rate.
Rich in essential fatty acids, algae are used in fish and shellfish feed and agricultural fertilisers. NTT Green & Food will initially provide algae to aquaculture operators and farmers facing costs due to recent price surges in raw materials.
The production and sale of seafood – NTT will use the algae to help increase the growth rate for regional species as well as implement technology to improve breeding rates in land-based farming. The seafood produced from this project will be provided to distributors, wholesalers and processors.
Development and provision of sustainable land-based aquaculture – Finally, the company says it will develop a land-based aquaculture system comprising three plants: one which produces fish and shellfish, one producing the algae to feed them and finally a water purification plant.
NTT Green & Food hopes this venture will create jobs, promote local industries and provide educational opportunities. It says it is aiming for revenues of around US$70 million in five years and more than US$200 million in a decade.
