Dr Jake Rice (Canada) received the ICES Outstanding Achievement Award in recognition of sustained, outstanding performance, exceptional contributions, and leadership. This Award is the highest expression of recognition and appreciation for contributions to ICES.

Dr Rice's contributions are especially noted as Chair of numerous ICES committees, including the Consultative Committee (ConC), the Multispecies Assessment Working Group and Working Group on Ecosystem Effects of Fishing Activities, where he played a key role in promoting ICES

The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), in cooperation with the German Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fishery and the German Scientific Commission, held its Annual Science Conference 2009 (ASC) in Berlin, Germany, 21-25 September. The event brought together almost 700 scientists, science managers, and other stakeholders from all over the world with a view to debate various aspects of sustainable management of oceans and their resources.
