Spanish company Kinarca has recently completed one of the biggest slurry ice installations in the world, for Promarisco in Ecuador, part of the Pescanova Group.

The system is for Promarisco’s new prawn factory and will have production capacities of 960 tons of slurry ice per day (with 25% concentration), 625 tons of slurry is with 40% concentration and 250 tons of dry ice per day.

Equipment supplied includes screw compressor package, mounting frame, evaporator condensers, chillers and storage tanks. The plant will work automatically with a specific PLC program designed for this project, with the option to be monitored from Kinarca’s Vigo premises.

The system works with fresh water and there is a deposit for a high brine concentration to supply the salt to the fresh water for the production of slurry ice. Every aspect is monitored with a mass flow system to check the salt concentration at all times – information is sent to the main control panel and the PLC programme will manage the system depending on the information received.

The contract for this installation was signed in January and in just 10 weeks the company loaded 12 40ft containers in Vigo. The installation was completed in Ecuador in a very short time. At the time of writing, the system had been running for three weeks and was due to have its open day at the end of July.

Kinarca is also working on new slurry ice contracts with Dutch, Russian, Lithuanian and Spanish companies to be delivered this year. The company’s R&D department is working on new slurry ice applications and its tailor made screw compressor packages are receiving very good feedback from the fishing industry around the world.
