An environmental lifecycle assessment tool is now available for the aquaculture industry.

First introduced for land-based species in 2021, Sustell has been expanded for use in fish-farming following cooperation with Faroese salmon producer, Bakkafrost. It is said to be the only such system with independent ISO certification from DNV.

Developed by Royal DSM together with lifecycle analysis expert, Blonk, the Sustell service comprises an intelligence platform connected to Blonk’s APS-footprint tool which allows a team of experts to analyse customers’ environmental footprints using actual farm and feed data rather than industry averages and proxy data sets.

“Having real, credible and accurate data will unlock an entire set of opportunities for seafood producers and their value chain partners,” explained David Nickell, vice president sustainability & business solutions DSM Animal Nutrition & Health.

“We designed Sustell to simplify the complexity of measuring, validating and improving the environmental sustainability of animal protein transparently and scientifically, farm by farm, system by system,” he added.

Fish plays an essential role in a sustainable diet and fish-farming will only become a larger part of that in the future. “More and more fish is derived from aquaculture,” said Hans Blonk, chief executive of Blonk Consultants & Blonk Sustainability Tools.

“We are very excited with the launch of Sustell for salmon and support producers in continuously improving the environmental performance of aquaculture systems worldwide.”
