The AFMA Commission has approved a new policy for processing and granting scientific permits under the Fisheries Management Act (FMA).
Scientific permits are granted to conduct scientific research in a specified area of the Australian Fishing Zone, or in a specified fishery for a limited period of time.
The development of the new policy has involved extensive consultation, including workshops with AFMA fishery managers and input from the Commonwealth Fisheries Association, key researchers and recent users of scientific permits.
The policy will assist in granting scientific permits under the FMA by improving the quality and consistency of decision making.
