Innovasea has launched a commercially available seabream algorithm for biomass estimation, reportedly the first of its kind in the world.

The algorithm, part of Innovasea’s AI-powered BiomassPro solution, offers over 95% accuracy in real-time gilthead seabream weight estimations, a significant milestone for the aquaculture industry.

“We are excited to expand our multi-species offering and bring the first gilthead seabream biomass solution to market,” said Rafael Cordero, Innovasea’s Vice President. “Our compact, portable solution is uniquely suited to meet the demands of seabream farmers who are overseeing numerous pens and require accurate, efficient biomass estimation across their operations.”

BiomassPro features a camera weighing 7.5kg which analyses fish stocks and provides precise biomass estimates via the dashboard. This automated process replaces manual sampling, allowing a single worker to set up the system in just five minutes, down from 30 minutes and requiring four workers.

The technology was tested at Aquafrais Cannes, a French aquaculture facility which has operated for over 35 years and is renowned for its sustainable seabream and seabass farming methods.

“Thanks to BiomassPro, we get more precise estimates in less time,” said Jérôme Hémar, general manager at Aquafrais. “Now, we can better predict sales and reassign our lean team from biomass calculations to other vital farm tasks.”

The solution currently supports six species, including gilthead seabream, with a European sea bass algorithm set for release later this year.
