ACE Refrigeration has recently installed a new cold room for DFDS Logistics Scotland at its facility in Aberdeen, Scotland.

DFDS offers a complete range of logistics solutions and is the largest provider of transportation services to the Scottish salmon and seafood industries. The main warehouse facility is located in Larkhall, near Glasgow. This is supported by two satellite warehouses in Aberdeen and Boulogne Sur Mer, France, providing Europe-wide distribution facilities.
The new cold room has a footprint of 312.66m², which will cool 6,000kg of produce, entering at +10°C, and pulled down within 12 hours, using refrigerant R407f.
The company has also recently completed a project at Spey Valley Smokehouse in Granton on Spey, in the Scottish Highlands. Spey Valley provides smoked fish to the domestic and export retail and wholesale markets, and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Strathaird Salmon Ltd, which in turn is part of Young’s Seafood.
ACE Refrigeration was responsible for the design, supply and installation of new refrigeration for the post smoke blast chill, as well as an R22 Retro-fit for the raw fish intake chill, the cure chill, the holding chill and the dispatch chill.
Following European legislation, the ban on recycled and/or reclaimed R22 Refrigeration gas came into effect on 31 December 2014. In addition, more recent legislation by the EU Commission sets deadlines to reduce HFC refrigerant gases with a GWP in excess of 2500. So for this retrofit ACE used the new Isceon 99 refrigerant, known as R438A, with a GWP of 2264.
For the refrigeration replacement for the post smoke blast chill, ACE installed a high efficiency Guntner evaporator with a stainless steel finish and energy efficient condensing unit, using R407F refrigerant which has a GWP of 1850. This system has the capacity for 1400kg of product to be pulled down from +28°C to 0°C within just four hours.
Due to tight production deadlines on site, ACE Refrigeration engineers completed the entire project during a 24 hour shutdown of the factory to reduce the impact on the day to day operation of the business.
