Consolidation of the Danish herring industry continues as the Skagerak Holding A/S-owned companies Uni-Fish, Essi and Skagerak Fiskeeksport A/S (pelagic) have concluded a conditional agreement on a merger with Erik Taabbel Fiskeeksport A/S.
This merger will come into effect on 1 July 2008.
Skagerak Holding A/S says that the merger with Erik Taabbel Fiskeeksport A/S is taking place in order to bolster the company’s position on a turbulent global market which presents major challenges, both in terms of the supply of raw materials and in terms of sales.
Business activities will continue in a single company under the name Skagerak Pelagic A/S.
Following a comprehensive restructuring and modernisation of the activities within the four herring industries’ plants, Skagerak Pelagic A/S will concentrate its production of pickled and processed herring products in Skagen, whilst the production of fresh and frozen herring products will be concentrated in Hirtshals, which will also be the site of the production of mackerel and roe.
Skagerak Pelagic A/S will have a turnover in the region of DKK 500 million and will employ around 200 personnel.
The management will consist of Managing Director Iver Espersen, Director Peter Kongerslev and Financial Director Kim Bennedsen.
At the age of 69, Director V. G. Mikkelsen, Erik Taabbel Fiskeeksport A/S, has decided not to continue his many years of service in the Danish fishing industry and will take this opportunity to begin his retirement.
Skagerak Pelagic A/S will handle approximately 60% of the Danish production of herring products. The overwhelming majority will be sold on export markets, in addition to which the group will act as a supplier to major Danish producers of semi-preserved herring products.
The merger does not include the Skagerak Group’s shipping company, salmon industry, Nyfrost or transport division.
