This month Young’s have published a new document that details the rules that govern fish sourcing in the Young’s business. The company says that this a cornerstone of the company’s overall ‘Fish for Life’ sustainability programme.
‘Ten Principles for Sustainable Fish Procurement’ has been developed by Young’s Sustainability Group, a board-driven initiative intended to ensure a sustainable approach throughout the Young’s business.
The Ten Principles are:
Legality – never knowingly purchasing fish which has been caught, landed or farmed illegally
Objective assessment - basing fish procurement decisions on a unique formal election criterion that clearly defines the company’s understanding of ‘responsible’ procurement
Labelling – ensuring that products are labelled so that consumers have sufficient information at point of sale to make informed purchasing decisions
Promotion - actively promoting the use of certified sustainable species in the market place
Continuous improvement – actively encouraging and working with suppliers to strive for improvement in best fishing and farming practises and implementing technologies that an minimise the environmental impact of fishing
Engagement – engaging openly with all parties to ensure that policies, values and regarding responsible fish procurement are leading and shaping opinion
Prohibition – clearly defining ‘prohibited’ products and practises and never knowingly supporting them in any commercial operations
Research – identifying and becoming involved with scientific research projects for more effective technical conservation methods for fishery management, and using the company’s market position to encourage participation and implementation within the catching sector
Traceability – endorsing, supporting, promoting and participating in new developments and technologies in this field and striving to ensure all wild captured fish are traceable back to vessel and catch area
Ethics and environment – not conducting trade with companies that are not mindful of their ethical, social, environmental, financial and humanitarian responsibilities
