The UK government is pushing for a fair deal for European fishing quotas after meeting with fishermen ahead of the EU December Council.

Meeting earlier this week, fishermen, governments and environmental NGOs presented their priorities ready for negotiations of next year’s fishing opportunities.

“I want to work closely with fishermen so we can achieve our shared goals of a thriving fishing industry, sustainable fish stocks and a healthy marine environment,” said Fisheries Minister George Eustice.

“By hearing from different parts of our fleet I can better represent the entirety of UK fisheries and secure the best possible deal for everyone at December Council,” he added.

The Minister will also visit Kilkeel harbour to meet with local fishermen, Sea-Source and Kilkeel Seafoods to discuss issues of importance to the local industry, including Irish Sea Nephrops.

The EU December Council will take place in Brussel on 18 December 2014.
