According to EU regulations 1088/2008, fishing vessels greater than 24m in length overall will be required to electronically record and transmit logbook data on a daily basis as from 1 January 2010. The same requirement will apply to EU fishing vessels greater than 15m in length overall as from 1 July 2011.

TrackWell ERS system overview

The Icelandic company TrackWell is supplying electronic logbook and catch information system for captains, fleet managers and fishing authorities. The information is managed by the master of the fishing vessel and mandatory data is transmitted to the fishing authorities. The fishing companies can use the same system for their own benefits, to collect detailed information on their fishing operations. The managers onshore can view the current catch onboard, the catch value and fishing grounds. Companies that operate a fleet of vessels can therefore improve access to valuable data on their vessels significantly. The history trail and current location of the vessels can be viewed on Electronic Chart Display (ECDIS) or optionally on the Internet. Product information from the vessels can also be transferred directly to traceability systems, fish auction markets or other commercial organisations.

TrackWell has signed an agreement with a Faroese organisation, jointly operated by the association of fishing vessel owners, fish processors and fish buyers, to supply their vessels with electronic logbooks. The data from the logbooks is fed into their traceability system, TracePlace.

TracePlace consists of an electronic platform which can be accessed via the internet by all sectors connected with the Faroese whitefish industry; fishing vessel owners/skippers, fish auction staff, buyers and processors, plus importers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers and caterers in other countries. When the skippers send the electronic catch log required by law, they also send a list of the daily catch to the TracePlace system where it is possible to trace everything from the total catch to a single fish box. Those who send documents into TracePlace own this information and it is the skipper’s decision who else receives a copy of the documents.
