Dr Darian McBain, Thai Union’s group director of sustainability, has been recognised as one of ten SDG pioneers by the United Nations Global Compact.

SDG Pioneers are business leaders selected by the UN Global Compact for doing an exceptional job to advance the sustainable development goals (SDGs) through the implementation of the UN Global Compact Ten Principles on human rights, environment, labour and anti-corruption.
“I’m incredibly honoured to receive this recognition, particularly alongside the other SDG Pioneers who are working incredibly hard on making businesses and the world around them more sustainable,” said Dr McBain. “Thai Union has placed sustainability at the heart of its business and I would like to recognise our teams around the world who are, like me, passionate about making a difference and helping build a more sustainable global seafood industry.”
Dr McBain was recognised in particular for her contribution towards a sustainable ocean economy. Thai Union, which has been a participant of the UN Global Compact since 2013, is especially focused on four of the goals: SDG 2 – Zero Hunger, SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 13 – Climate Action and SDG 14 – Life Below Water.
The SDG Pioneer entries were judged by a panel of previous Pioneers and representatives from the UN Global Compact Expert Network, academia and UN agencies. The 2021 SDG Pioneers were announced during the UN Global Compact Leaders’ Summit 2021 on 16 June.
