Seafish and Defra to host seminars on new IUU Regulations and UK business

Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated fishing (IUU) remains one of the biggest global threats to the sustainable management of fish stocks. To help British seafood businesses manage the introduction of new legislation designed to combat IUU, Seafish has joined forces with DEFRA to create a series of free seminars for seafood businesses.

The European Community is the world’s largest importer of fish and seafood products and therefore a major target for illegal operators. To address this issue, the Commission has introduced Regulation (1005/2008) to prevent illegally caught fishery products from entering the EU market. The new rules will be applicable throughout the EC from 1 January 2010.

These regulations will have an effect on companies who import fish and fishery products from outside the EU or export it to non-EU countries, so Seafish and Defra are hosting a series of seminars to provide more information on the new rules and what UK businesses will need to do to comply.

All three seminars will commence at 11.00am (coffee will be available from 10.30am) and will conclude with a finger buffet and chance to network at about 1.30pm.
