New evidence revealing a dramatic fall in illegal fishing in Scotland was presented on 28 November to the EU President Jose-Manuel Barrosso.

The Scottish Fisheries Protection Agency (SFPA) has published trend data on black fish landings which show that the problem has fallen to its lowest level since records began.

Fisheries Minister Ross Finnie said:

“Scotland’s fishermen have made real progress in recent years towards operating a sustainable, profitable and well-managed industry.

“This is bearing fruit. Today we are announcing that levels of Scottish undeclared landings have declined to negligible levels. This is a very significant development reflecting a dramatic change in behaviour and in relations within the sector.”
