Icelandic line caught haddock will now be added to the already well established offering of MSC products in store.

Ally Dingwall, Aquaculture & Fisheries Manager, Sainsbury’s, described the company as being: “proud to continue to lead the way” in offering sustainable seafood to their customers.

This news coincides with the first Icelandic fishery achieving MSC certification for sustainability.

Sainsbury’s has long flown the flag for sustainably sourced seafood. It also subscribes to the RSPCA’s Freedom Food campaign and in 2008 launched its responsibly sourced salmon programme with fish reared on RSPCA approved farms in Scotland.

Last October, the retailer announced a 20 by 20 sustainability plan that aims to make all fish sold certified as sustainable by 2020. With this, the company continues to set the bar high for other retailers in terms of the sustainability war.

The MSC works with global fishing concerns to promote seafood traceability and promote sustainable fishing processes.
