New statistics published by the UK’s Marine Management Organisation (MMO) show an increase in the quantity and value of fish landed by the UK fleet in 2010 compared with 2009.
The ‘UK Fishing Industry in 2010: Landings’ report available on the organisation’s website shows that during 2010 the fleet landed 606,000 tonnes of sea fish (including shellfish) into the UK and abroad with a value of £719 million. Compared with 2009, this represents a 4% increase in quantity and a 7% increase in value.
The statistics are being released in advance of the compendium publication UK Sea Fisheries Statistics 2010 in late September in a drive to provide data to the public as soon as they are available. A separate report on the structure and activity of the UK fleet was published in June.
