Poles tailor Baltic trawl for pelagics

This equipment consists of a very big gear with a very small angle of attack, with the front using Enkalon ropes from Van Beelen and Carlsen Net is supplying the netting with frame rope made from Dyneema.

The new gear will work with a new generation of semi-pelagic NTR trawl doors from Poldoor. These have a very high spreading force, can be operated close to the surface and have excellent stability.

Testing has been done at a model station on Insko Lake (Poland). Krzysztof Stanuch, manager director of Baltic Net, says: “We hope that results with the real size will be as good as those obtained with the model. If this is the case, then we will be prepared, of course, to make different sizes of this trawl to fit vessels of various sizes.”

Baltic Net is one of a handful of companies specialising in trawls for krill fisheries. According to Stanuch, the cod ends perform very well allowing krill to move directly to the end so it is not necessary to wash the cod end for very long time before next haul. “It seems that the interest in krill fishery is increasing again. Having in mind the fish stock depletion all over the world, krill remains a huge potential source of proteins”, Stanuch said.
