Saipem, Aqualoop sign strategic collaboration agreement

As per the agreement, Saipem will work with Aqualoop on further developing its offshore salmon farming technology and overcoming the limitations of current confined water farming systems.

According to Sapiem, the technological complexity of open-sea farming requires advanced skills that are part of its engineering know-how. Through the new collaboration, Saipem is specifically responsible for the construction of offshore fish farming cages, submergible down to depths of 20-plus metres below the sea surface and about 160 metres in diameter.

Saipem is already present in Norway through its subsidiary Moss Maritime, which specialises in design and engineering services for offshore energy and other marine sectors.

“Aquaculture is an emerging sector as it is increasingly projected towards open-sea farming and the use of new technologies. Moreover, market projections indicate an increase in demand for fish products in the next 25-30 years, while natural resources have plateaued for several years,” it said in a statement.

“The partnership between Saipem and Aqualoop marks a significant step towards a more sustainable future for the entire fish industry, leveraging cutting-edge technologies to address current farming challenges.”
