UK announces bluefin tuna fishing plan
The United Kingdom’s Marine Management Organisation (MMO) has published guidance on this year’s fishing plan for Atlantic bluefin tuna in UK waters.
Its 66.15 tonnes of quota will include 16 tonnes for recreational permitting schemes and 39 tonnes for a trial commercial fishery with the remainder used for UK commercial by-catch and tagging programmes.
The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), the Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (RFMO) responsible for managing Atlantic bluefin, has endorsed the UK’s plans.
Decisions on how government intend to use our quota have been made to ensure that bluefin tuna fisheries meet international commitments, contribute to delivering Fisheries Act 2020 objectives, and reflect stakeholder interests including both the commercial and recreational fishers.
