Have a say on proposed Scottish fishing curbs

Scottish fisheries could be facing major changes as MSPs launch a consultation on proposals to restrict offshore fishing in marine protected areas.

The Scottish Parliament’s Rural Affairs and Islands Committee is inviting views on the Scottish Government’s plans to prohibit or limit certain fishing methods in 19 protected zones around Scotland.

“We’re opening a short call for views to help us scrutinise the Scottish Government’s proposals to prohibit certain fishing methods in marine protected areas and special areas of conservation,” said Finlay Carson MSP, Convener of the Committee.

“Whether you work in Scotland’s fishing industry, are interested in the conservation of our marine environment, or represent communities living on the coastline, we’re keen to hear from you.”

The proposals, part of the Offshore Fishing (Prohibition of Fishing Methods) (Scotland) Order 2025 aim to safeguard marine biodiversity and conserve vital ecosystems.

Under the proposals, five areas including the Anton Dohrn SAC and West of Scotland MPA would see full restrictions, while 14 other zones would allow limited offshore fishing under strict rules.

These 19 sites include ten marine protected areas and nine special areas of conservation, with measures tailored to local ecological sensitivities.

The consultation will run until Friday 12 September.

After collecting responses, the Committee said it will hold evidence sessions with the fishing industry, coastal communities and conservation experts before making recommendations.
