Icelandic farmed fish production falls
Iceland’s aquaculture production in 2023 totalled 50,000 tonnes in 2023, representing a 3.5% decrease from the previous year, according to data published by Statistics Iceland.
In terms of key species, the country’s Atlantic salmon production slipped to 43,523 tonnes last year, continuing the decline seen in 2022 (44,934 tonnes). A record 46,458 tonnes of salmon was recorded in 2021.
The value of its salmon exports fell 9% year-on-year to ISK 40 billion.
Meanwhile, last year’s Arctic char production amounted to 5,248 tonnes, up from 4,931 in 2022, while its rainbow trout harvest was just 441 tonnes (down from 1,131 tonnes in 2022).
It’s expected that many key stakeholders from Iceland’s fisheries and aquaculture sectors will be attending and supporting the 14th Icelandic Fisheries, Seafood & Aqua Exhibition (IceFish), taking place 18-20 September 2024 at the Smárinn, Fifan Halls Kópavogur, Iceland.
