With design, development and production facilities and repair workshops in the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Newfoundland, Vónin® offers products and services for trawlers and purse seiners of every type, as well as for the fish farming industry.
The company's comprehensive range of net-based fishing gear includes pelagic trawls, semi-pelagic trawls, bottom trawls, shrimp trawls, purse seine nets, nets for fish farming and, in addition, trawl doors and accessories.
The company's tagline is “we make fishing more profitable” and, according to Vónin, this is done by focusing on product and service quality.
In a bid to fortify its leading position in the North Atlantic, Vónin purchased seafood giant Royal Greenland's trawl manufacturing activities in Nuuk. The company later took over Royal Greenland's fishing gear business unit in Ilulissat, Greenland and simultaneously bought 51% of Qalut Sisimiut in Sisimiut, Greenland. In December 2006 the company purchased 22% of the Hampiðjan Group in Iceland, which makes Vónin the second largest shareholder of one of the largest purse seine and trawl companies in the world.
In addition, Vónin is expecting its new red fish trawl RED LION® and new ground fish trawl NIMROD 520 to add significant value to the business.
NIMROD 520 is different to the trawls usually used in the North Atlantic as the trawl does not have long headlines and fishing lines. This makes the trawl flexible when towing and very stable in rough bottom and where the bottom structure is changing. The company has received positive feedback from users of NIMROD 520. The first skipper to try the trawl was Eyðun á Bergi, skipper on the deep freezer “Vesturvón” of Fuglafjørð, Faroe Islands.
Vónin has also developed a new redfish trawl named RED LION®, which was launched in February 2007. Research and development into RED LION® took place from May 2004 to December 2006. In this period the trawl was tested onboard various vessels. The latest tests were made onboard the vessel “Fagraberg”, fishing for redfish at Smuthavet, North-East of the Faroe Islands, where other vessels such as “Skálaberg”, “Ran”, “Enniberg”, “Polonus” and “Baldvin Thorsteinson” were also fishing. The trawl used during the trial was a 2,048 metre trawl, which is smaller than those used by other vessels in the same fishing grounds. However, based on data from various vessels logbooks, the RED LION® showed its strength and fishing capability as the trawl caught more per tow than majority of vessels in same area.
Vonin will be exhibiting at the North Atlantic Fish Fair, 3-5 May 2007
