This year the Icelandic fishing fleet has been mandated to use an electronic logbook system. The mandate is taking place in three steps for different sizes of vessels.

The Logbook

Over 300 Icelandic vessels are now equipped with the SeaData fishing information system. SeaData collects the logbook data onboard, stores it in a database and sends the mandatory reports to the Directorate of Fisheries. Two packages are available, both complying with the electronic logbook regulations set by the Ministry.

The SeaData light package is a limited version of the SeaData system from TrackWell, distributed free of charge in Iceland. The other package is the full version of the SeaData information system, giving the users easy access to a great deal of information on their fisheries.

SeaData, composed of the Fishing and Product Log onboard the vessels and Fleet Manager at the office, is intended for larger fishing companies, which have a fleet of vessels. In this version, SeaData builds up a valuable database of the fisheries of the whole fleet of vessels owned by the fishing company. It allows the directors onshore to keep a close eye on what is happening at sea, as well as knowing in real-time what has been caught. This helps them to plan the processing or sale ahead, as well as enabling them to direct the fleet to the most prosperous fishing grounds at the given time of year.

Many have expressed their interest for a simple version of the SeaData system that allows them to collect and utilise the catch data in addition to fulfilling the requirements of the DoF. TrackWell is now meeting this demand by offering a new product, an all-in-one version of SeaData that runs all the components on one computer. This allows captains to maintain the mandatory logbook, but at the same time use the system as their own database of catches to look up and inspect. This system runs on a laptop computer, making it possible to send the data to the DoF from a land-based network, in email.

TrackWell is presenting this solution at the Icefish 2008 where it will be offered at a special discounted price.
