The R5 is internationally type approved and offers the professional user an ideal portable fully featured GMDSS survival craft handheld VHF radio that can also be used for general onboard communication, at a new lower cost.

McMurdo says that it is reliable and easy to use, 100% waterproof and submersible to half a metre for half an hour, and includes a ribbed design to ensure a solid grip in wet conditions.

The R5 also features large tactile buttons that can be easily operated, even when wearing gloves and the large backlit display makes it easy to read, even at night, where the red backlight prevents disturbance of the user’s night vision.

Commenting on the launch of the R5, Ross Wilkinson, sales director of Orolia Ltd (parent company of McMurdo) said “We are delighted to launch the new McMurdo R5 GMDSS VHF Handheld Radio, which has been built to meet the latest stringent IMO, GMDSS and ETSI standards and drop tested to cope with the toughest marine environments.

Weighing 340g, the R5 is able to operate in temperatures as low as -20˚ and has a six year battery storage life.
