Commenting on the news that Russian officials have decided to lift restrictions placed on UK fish imports last April, Liberal Democrat Fisheries spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:

"I welcome Russia's decision to lift restrictions on fish imports from the UK. This is good news for Scotland's fishing industry.

"The fishing industry in Scotland is vitally important to the Scottish and UK economies. Today's news will be a welcome boost to the industry at a time of economic hardship.

"With the lifting of this temporary ban, now is an ideal time for Ministers to work with the industry and businesses to find ways in which this market can be developed further.

"Russia has previously been an important market for Scottish pelagic fish. It is vital that our pelagic exports can compete on equal terms as their Norwegian counterparts. This means that the UK Government must provide export credit guarantees to meet those offered by the Norwegian Government."
