According to FAO, total seafood production in Turkey has reached 623,192 tonnes. While only 25% is represented by aquaculture, farmed seafood production has grown each year by around 20% in the past decade.

“The agreement with Friend of the Sea confirms DESAD’s mission to promote sustainable production as well as companies and consumers environmental awareness”, said DESAD president Niyazi Onen.

“Considering the growing global relevance of Turkey in food and seafood production we deem the official engagement to sustainable practices of the major seafood companies in the country to be extremely relevant,” explains Paolo Bray, director of Friend of the Sea. “We believe that Friend of the Sea certification will help motivating also other companies in this direction.”
