SeafoodAI has secured a major investment from NEC X to advance AI biometrics and improve seafood sustainability in global crab fisheries.

Using real-time biometric data, the startup’s flagship solution, CrabScan360, automates crab measurement, sorting and compliance, helping to reduce the $50 billion annual losses caused by outdated manual systems.
“Seafood sustainability is no longer optional; it’s imperative,” said Rob Terry, CEO and Founder of SeafoodAI.
“With CrabScan360, we’re digitising what was once a manual, labour-intensive process, bringing accuracy, transparency and trust directly to the seafood industry.”
Scaleable impact
The funding follows SeafoodAI’s graduation from NEC X’s Elev X! Ignite program.
NEC X, a venture studio leveraging NEC’s expertise in artificial intelligence and image recognition, selected SeafoodAI for investment based on its scalable impact and technical innovation.
CrabScan360 not only simplifies regulatory compliance but also helps fisheries meet growing demand from retailers like Walmart, Costco and Whole Foods, all of which are pushing for certified sustainable seafood by 2027.
Beyond hardware, SeafoodAI is building a scalable data infrastructure, laying the groundwork for a trusted digital verification marketplace that connects harvesters, processors, regulators and retailers with real-time, actionable data.
The startup is also expanding its biometric scanning innovations to additional seafood markets such as tuna, salmon and shrimp.
